🪑 How to Sit for the IELTS Speaking Test

Be prepared, stay calm, and speak with confidence!

The IELTS Speaking test is a conversation with an examiner, not a speech competition. Your goal is to communicate clearly and naturally.

Before the test

  • Arrive early and bring the identification document required for your test.
  • Turn off your mobile phone and follow the test center’s instructions.
  • Take a few slow breaths to relax before entering the room.
  • Remember that the examiner is there to assess your English, not to intimidate you.

During the test

  • Sit comfortably and maintain good posture. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your hands in a natural position.
  • Make natural eye contact. Look at the examiner when speaking, but don’t worry about maintaining constant eye contact.
  • Listen carefully to every question. If you don’t understand, politely ask the examiner to repeat or clarify the question.
  • Speak clearly and at a natural pace. You don’t need to speak very fast to achieve a high score.
  • Develop your answers. Instead of giving one-word answers, explain your ideas and provide reasons or examples.
  • Stay on topic. Answer the question directly before adding extra information.
  • Don’t memorize complete answers. Practice ideas and useful vocabulary, but respond naturally to the questions you are asked.
  • Don’t panic over mistakes. Correct yourself if necessary and continue speaking.
  • Never give up if a question is difficult. Try to explain what you think, even if you need a moment to organize your ideas.

What happens in the three parts?

Part 1 — Introduction and Interview (4–5 minutes)

The examiner asks about familiar topics such as your home, work, studies, hobbies and daily life. Give a direct answer and add a reason or a short example.

Part 2 — Individual Long Turn (3–4 minutes)

You receive a task card and have one minute to prepare. Use the preparation time to write keywords, organize your ideas and plan your answer. You then speak for up to two minutes.

Part 3 — Discussion (4–5 minutes)

The examiner asks more general and abstract questions related to the Part 2 topic. Explain your opinions, compare ideas, discuss advantages and disadvantages, and support your answers with reasons and examples.

Final reminder

Download Free IELTS Speaking Exams can improve your IELTS score if you it right and follow the guidance and instructions given on this page.

You are not expected to know everything or have perfect grammar. You are expected to demonstrate your ability to communicate in English. Stay relaxed, listen carefully, develop your answers and keep going.

Practice before the test, trust your preparation, and give every question your best effort. Your goal is progress, confidence and clear communication!

One important tip for students: Practice speaking aloud under timed conditions before exam day. Sitting down and answering questions silently in your head is not enough — you need to train yourself to organize and express your ideas out loud.
